BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL TRUST
FLY WITH THE STARS SUNDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2008
The President of the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, ACM Sir Michael Graydon GCB CBE, is asking for your support for this major fundraising event, to maintain the national Memorial to the Few at Folkestone in Kent, at the London Palladium in the presence of HRH Prince Michael of Kent KCVO on Sunday 7 September 2008 at 7.15 pm.
FLY WITH THE STARS will be a star- studied evening of top class entertainment – a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The stars of today will recreate the hits of 1940 – the music and comedy that did so much to lift spirits during the dark days of 1940 and so helped to win the war.
From the stirring strains of William Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue to the big band sound of Glenn Miller by way of Noel Coward, Ivor Novello and The Lambeth Walk FLY WITH THE STARS will be a musical treat. Brian Conley and West End Star Sally Ann Triplett will start the ball rolling with the Lambeth Walk – complete with the Pearly Kings and Queens of London. Other highlights include a selection of Novello and Coward hits featuring Marilyn Hill Smith, Millicent Martin and Coronation Street’s Wendi Peters singing “If Love Were All” – one of Noel Coward’s most poignant songs. The first half will be rounded off in dramatic style by an appearance by The Central Band of the RAF.
Act Two opens with charismatic Musical Director Gareth Valentine leading the orchestra in Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood”. Comedy will feature next with Roy Hudd as “The Cheeky Chappy” Max Miller and Celia Imrie and Sally Ann Triplett reminding us of the war-time comedy duo “Gert and Daisy”. A section devoted to the film musicals of the period, which includes Strictly Come Dancing’s Anton Du Beke as Fred Astaire, leads us to the patriotic finale featuring the songs of Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn plus the new singing group sensation BLAKE. These are just a few of the many wonderful surprises that will make FLY WITH THE STARS a glittering night of entertainment for all the family.
